Did you doubt it or not? I certainly did, I doubted Sonam Kapoor to play the real life character, like Neerja and carry it off. I doubted that an incredible subject like the true story of Neerja to be ruined due to the casual fashionable aura of the actress. But I am happy that I’ve been proven wrong.
Neerja is Sonam Kapoor’s finest act till date and as much the credit should be given to her it is also the victory of director Ram Madhvani.
The Plot
By now due to the full blown promotions we already know the heartbreaking story of Neerja Bhanot. The Pan Am air hostess who sacrificed her life while saving the lives of 379 passengers in a Hijack.
The Good
- The screenplay which unfolds in parallel at Mumbai and Karachi, till both the stories collide.
- The authentic acting by Sonam Kapoor and Shabana Azmi. Shekhar Ravjiani does an endearing debut.
- The direction, the movie grips you completely, the characters make you feel for them and your heart goes out for the passengers and crew stuck with the Hijackers. The director is successful in sharing his vision and propagate his emotions.
- It is a cryfest, make sure you carry the tissue box with you ‘coz Shabana Azmi’s speech towards climax is gut-wrenching.
- The message, the girl proves herself mightier than the terrorists, the Pilots, and every man in that Pan Am flight. A true role model for everyone.
The Bad
- The drama went a little overboard towards the second half which makes you lose the reality of the film.
The most important part of recreating a true story is the screenplay as it is a great challenge for a director since the audience already knows the story. Therefore, the treatment and the unfolding of the events should be such that the audience doesn’t lose their focus. And director is effectively able to do so.There is also mention of Neerja’s failed abusive marriage, and it is used effectively show the faith of her family in her and the strength she gets from them.
This is a good year for Bollywood it seems go for it, Neerja is courageous, it is a story of bravery that must be repeatedly told to the generations to come.
